Well its been a good while since i've been online !I decided not to pursue a career in the Merchant Navy and turned down 3 offers of cadetships.I stayed working as a Bosun on the Caledonian Cannal onboard "Ros Crana" , it was my dream job .I worked from 6am-10pm 6 and a half days a week for 7 months , I met friends for life and discovered some truely amazing locations and have found happyness with my life that I just have not found in the past.
I have gathered a min of 1500 Nautical Miles and so much life experience , at the end of the day I may not have eared big dollars but what I have gained otherwise has been overwhelming and well worth the time.
Over the season I had a 5 meter Humber rib with a new 60 HP 4 stroke Yamaha Engine , she was a fabulous vessel to skipper.I had many a great saving private Ryan style beach landings throughout the months .I was able to spot and rescue 3 vessels and be rescued once due to gearbox failure (which occured on my 1 week on the sister ship !).
I have gained so much experience in everything from my rib driving abilities - anchoring-helmship-life!I finished a few weeks ago and am now living in Corpach, Fort William and hoping to start a job up Nevis Range as a Lift Operator for the winter.
I intend to do a rather pricey course at a Nautical College which will qualify me to be a Chief Engineer onboard a variety of vessels which are up to 200 tonnes and 60 miles offshore , Since I have been working with 2 engines every day for the season I have got a taste for oil and grease so want to do this course .
I hope to work in the Great Glen again next year either as a Bosun or Engineer, the Merchant Navy will wait in the shadows for now as I love the Highlands and the boats here too much to just walk away from to return to many years in the future no matter how much of a temptation it may be.
For me at this point in time , I'm exactly where I should be in life and made one of the best decisions by turning down the cadetship to continue my job as a Bosun .It certainly was the hardest desicion I have ever had to make!
